Self-care should be a top priority for everyone, especially those who have stressful jobs — like funeral directors. With August 15 being National Relaxation Day, we want to share ways funeral directors can relax and relieve stress. By showing yourself some kindness, you will feel more energized and relaxed when helping your families.
Even though August 15 is National Relaxation Day, you should practice relaxation techniques year-round. We’ve brainstormed a few stress-relieving summer activities to enjoy before fall arrives.
1. Get in the Water
Before the summer ends, make sure to take a dip in the pool or lake! Going for a relaxing swim or kayaking can clear your mind and give you a break from the world momentarily. Or, if swimming and boating isn’t your forte, sitting in a hot tub or a bubble bath is just as relaxing. Grab your favorite drink and book and you’re all set for relaxation.
2. Explore Nature
Summer also is the perfect time to get out in nature! Go for a walk or bike ride on your favorite trail or explore somewhere new! This is one of my favorite ways to relax and feel at ease. Don’t forget to bring your grief therapy dog along for the fun. You also can make a stop at the dog park and play fetch.
3. Take a Family Trip
Relax by spending some quality time with your loved ones. For those who have children, there’s still time for a family vacation or staycation before fall arrives. One idea that incorporates many of the other relaxation ideas is to go camping. Or, take a day-trip to the amusement park or water park. You’ll be able to relax and create cherished memories with those you love.
4. Read a Book
Set up a hammock and curl up with a good book! It’s always nice to get away from our phone and computer screens when we can. Need some book ideas? Check out this article that suggests six books that every funeral director should read! They range in topics, from coping with grief to the funeral profession.
5. Host a Community Bonfire
Get your community involved by hosting a low-key summer event that everyone can enjoy. Some ideas include hosting a bonfire with s’mores or a picnic where everyone brings a dish to pass. Or, host an outdoor movie screening. You can choose a movie that also has a meaningful lesson about grief, such as Up or We Bought a Zoo.
