An epitaph comes from our desire to remember, as well as be remembered. Epitaphs have been used throughout history — from ancient Rome to the present.

The reasons for them vary.

Let’s take a look at some memorable epitaphs that have been used to honor someone.

1. Hank Williams

“I’ll never get out of this world alive.”

The country legend’s grave actually has multiple epitaphs, each one for a top 10 hit. This epitaph stands out, and not just because of the wry humor. The song was released just months before Williams died at the age of 29.

2. Winston Churchill

“I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”

The epitaph perfectly reflects the style and humor of Churchill’s stalwart personality.

3. F. Scott Fitzgerald

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

A powerful passage from the end of Fitzgerald’s classic, The Great Gatsby. It makes for a somber epitaph about staying optimistic in the face of challenges.

4. Ludolph van Ceulen

“3.14159265358979323846264338327950”

Does that number look familiar? In the 1500s, Dutch mathematician van Ceulen was the first to calculate the value of pi out to 35 digits. He was so proud of his crowning achievement he wanted it on his grave.

5. Frank Sinatra

“The best is yet to come.”

Taken from one of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ greatest hits. It’s simple, inspiring, and timeless.

6. Mom’s Christmas Cookies

An Iowa woman left a special treat for her loved ones. The back of her tombstone is marked with a recipe for her famous Christmas sugar cookies. Family, friends, and any passerby can enjoy her last gift!
