Spending time with those younger than us helps us stay young. It’s also a way to make a difference in a young person’s life and leave a lasting impression. That’s why it’s so important to take the time to better connect with the children in your life — your grandchildren.
By creating a meaningful connection with your grandchildren, your legacy will live on. They’ll share stories of your good times together with their own children and so on.
Below are some ideas on how to strengthen your relationship with your grandchildren and leave a lasting legacy behind.
Plan One-On-One Time
It’s likely that when you see your grandchildren it’s typically at a holiday or family gathering. Those these times are special, it’s also important to plan one-on-one time with each grandchild. Do something that you both will enjoy like going out to eat or watching a movie.
We realize that as your family grows, this becomes more difficult. However, these are the times your grandchild will cherish the most.
Be Present for Their Activities
Showing up for their activities such as sports, the school play, or their dance recital means a lot. Typically, these events are followed with a trip to a local restaurant. This is the perfect time to talk about their activity and share what you enjoyed most about it.
Tell Stories from Your Life
If you really want to leave a legacy, tell your grandkids about your own life. They’ll be even more interested to hear about the days before they were born.
What were you like when you were their age? What do you remember about school? What was your first job like? Do you have any funny family stories? These stories could even get passed down to their children!
Teach Them a New Skill
Teach them a skill they can use the rest of their life. How to change a tire, sew a button, bake your famous recipes, and perfectly hit a golf ball are all things they won’t learn in school but should know! Then, every time they do these things or share their knowledge, they’ll think of you!
Get to Know What They Like
Though it’s important to spend time doing things you like to do with your grandchildren, it’s important to show an interest in the things they enjoy too. Have them explain that new internet fad or get to know what kids their age are doing. If you’re in a funny mood, you could even partake in them too!
