When you lose a spouse or partner, you lose a piece of yourself. Losing anyone is never easy, but losing someone you’ve spent much of your life with is unimaginable.

Dates such as anniversaries and holidays — like Valentine’s Day — can be an extra hard time. That’s why we wanted to provide some inspiring words of wisdom to share with those who lost their other half.

“They say love beyond the world cannot be separated by it. Death cannot kill what never dies.”
— William Penn, Founder of Pennsylvania.

“A happy marriage is a long conversation which always seems too short.”
— André Maurois, French author.

“Death is nothing at all.

It does not count.

I have only slipped away into the next room.

Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.

I am I, and you are you,

and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.

Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

— From the poem Death Is Nothing At All by Henry Scott-Holland.

“How many loved your moments of glad grace,

And loved your beauty with love false or true,

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,

And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled

And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.”

— From the poem When You Are Old by W.B. Yeats.

“To Live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”
— Thomas Campbell, Scottish poet.

“If ever two were one, then surely we.

If ever man were loved by wife, then thee;

If ever wife was happy in a man,

Compare with me ye women if you can.

I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,

Or all the riches that the East doth hold.”

— From the poem To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet.

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”

— William Goldman, author of the Princess Bride.
