National Stress Awareness Month: De-Stressing Activities

You don’t need us to tell you that funeral directors have stressful jobs. Since April is National Stress Awareness Month, we want to provide you with ways to relieve stress. After a long day’s work in the funeral profession serving your families and community, you deserve some relaxation time.

It can be as simple as dedicating a few minutes of your day to a de-stressing activity. Of course, we realize the funeral profession is unpredictable and sudden things come up. So it’s okay if it doesn’t always work out at the same time. Whenever you have free time, try one of these de-stressing activities to improve your mood, energy, and quality of life.

Solo De-Stressing Ideas

Some de-stressing activities that funeral directors can do on their own time are:

  • Reading to help you relax and provide you with a temporary escape from reality.
  • Going on a vacation or having a staycation. I bet there are many local parks, shops, or other tourist attractions near you that you’ve never explored.
  • Writing in a journal about your day, dreams, goals, or anything you wish. If you make time to write every day before you go to sleep, then it’ll become routine.
  • Listening to some music, whether it’s your favorite band or a new one you’ve been wanting to listen to. It can relieve stress and provide you with some comfort.

Group De-Stressing Ideas

To prevent your funeral home’s staff from getting compassion fatigue or burnout, try some group de-stressing activities, such as:

  • Volunteering at your local food bank, homeless shelter, or another organization. You can even write a blog post about your volunteer experience and share it with your funeral home’s social media followers.
  • Attending a group exercise or meditation class. In addition to relieving stress, it’s also a great way to spend time with your staff outside of work.
  • Planting some flowers or trees around your funeral home or in your community. Just make sure you have permission to plant your flowers or trees in your chosen location. You can invite your client families and community members to make it a community event.
  • Visiting your local animal shelter to play with and take care of the animals. Cuddling with animals will improve your overall mood and happiness as well as relieve stress.
