Selma, Alabama — St. James Hotel

Considered one of the most haunted places in Alabama, guests of the St. James Hotel have claimed to see the apparition of famous outlaw Jesse James and his girlfriend Lucinda. Sightings are most often in the rooms he typically stayed — 214, 314, and 315.

Anchorage, Alaska — Historic Anchorage Hotel

On February 20, 1921, Anchorage Police Chief John J. “Black Jack” Sturgus was found shot in the back with a bullet from his own gun, steps away from The Historic Anchorage Hotel. It is rumored that the ghost sightings are his ghost returning to the scene of the crime.

Bisbee, Arizona — Copper Queen Hotel

The Copper Queen Hotel is home to Julia Lowell — a prostitute who used to work in the hotel and killed herself after falling in love with a client who didn’t reciprocate. Guests report seeing her apparition dancing provocatively, smelling her perfume, and hearing her whispers.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas — Crescent Hotel

Considered by many as America’s most haunted hotel, the Crescent Hotel has a long history as a hotel, a college, a hospital, and later a hotel once again. It is said to be haunted by multiple spirits, including a stonemason that fell from its roof while building the hotel.

Los Angeles, California — Stay On Main

Once known as the Cecil Hotel, Stay On Main is home to a lot of unsettling stories. Most recently is that of Elisa Lam, a Canadian tourist who was found dead in the hotel’s water tanks without any explanation for how she died or how she ended up there in the first place.

Estes Park, Colorado — The Stanley Hotel

The inspiration for Stephen King’s “The Shining,” the Stanley Hotel is regarded by many paranormal experts as one of the most active sites in America. Most often spotted are apparitions of Freelan Oscar and Flora Stanley, the couple who built the hotel.

Torrington, Connecticut — Yankee Pedlar Inn

Much like the Stanley Hotel, the Yankee Pedlar Inn is thought to be haunted by its original owners. Guests have reported being visited by Alice Conley in room 353, where she supposedly died, as well as Frank Conley throughout the hotel.

Bethany Beach, Delaware — The Addy Sea

Built in 1902, the Addy Sea has several rooms that are reportedly haunted — rooms 1, 6, and 11. But guests throughout the hotel have reported bathtubs shaking without explanation, smells of perfume, and mysterious organ music despite there being no organs in the hotel.

Coral Gables, Florida — Biltmore Hotel

The Biltmore was built in 1926 as a hotel first, and at a loud party on the 13th floor a gangster named Thomas “Fatty” Walsh was shot and killed. After that, it was transformed into a hospital, abandoned for some time, then made into a hotel again, collecting spirits along the way.

Savannah, Georgia — The Marshall House

Used as a hospital three separate times since opening in 1851, the Marshall House features all sorts of sightings and strange phenomena. Guests hear children running down the halls late at night, see ghosts in the hallways and foyers, and witness faucets turning on by themselves.

Honolulu, Hawaii — Hilton Hawaiian Village

The Hilton Hawaiian Village, made famous when Elvis Presley filmed his movie Blue Hawaii on site, also is famous for its apparitions. Guests have reported seeing a young woman in a red dress that they believe is the spirit of a woman murdered there or the Volcano Goddess Pele.

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — The Bates Motel

Not to be confused with the hotel from the movie Psycho, the Bates Motel in Idaho is home to many odd occurrences but not any stabbings. Items move on their own and guests feel watched, get sudden cold sensations, or hear strange noises — especially in rooms 1 and 3.

Chicago, Illinois — Congress Plaza Hotel

With the distinction of being one of Chicago’s largest and most haunted hotels, the Congress Plaza Hotel is home to many strange happenings like organ music, moans, and apparitions. There also is a room so frightening that it has been sealed shut and hidden behind wallpaper.

French Lick, Indiana — French Lick Springs Hotel

The historic French Lick Springs Hotel is said to have everything from apparitions of its former owner, Thomas Taggart, to ghostly bellhops, loud parties in the ballroom without any people, and a red stain that appears in a tub where a bride is thought to have killed herself.

Davenport, Iowa — Hotel Blackhawk

In its glory days, the Blackhawk Hotel was a thing of beauty — until it was partially destroyed by a meth lab fire. But even after its restoration and renaming, the hotel remains home to several spirits, most notably Actor Cary Grant, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage in the hotel in 1986.

Beaumont, Kansas — Beaumont Hotel

The story goes that the old proprietor of the hotel would provide food and drink while his wife provided other forms of entertainment. When she became attached to a local cowboy named Zeke, the proprietor shot and killed him, and Zeke still haunts the Beaumont Hotel to this day.

Bardstown, Kentucky — The Old Talbott Tavern

Built in the 1700s, this inn fell to George Talbott in 1886 and by 1889 six of his children had died within the inn from everything from falling down stairs to hanging themselves. And much like the St. James Hotel, Jesse James’ ghost is known to visit this tavern every once in a while.

New Orleans, Louisiana — Bourbon Orleans Hotel

The site of a theater and convent before becoming a hotel, the Bourbon Orleans Hotel is home to many apparitions. Often seen are ghost children and nuns from when yellow fever struck the convent, but a Confederate soldier also makes appearances on the third and sixth floors.

Dedham, Maine — The Lucerne Inn

Though nobody knows for sure the exact details of this inn’s story, many believe that a double murder and suicide took place here when someone found their lover with another. Guests believe the tragedy occurred in room 8, which is known as the most haunted room of the inn.

Baltimore, Maryland — Lord Baltimore Hotel

A stay in one of the Lord Baltimore Hotel’s 439 rooms might offer you more than just your typical amenities. Guests are often paid a visit by the spirit of a young girl who is believed to have killed herself on the 19th floor.

Concord, Massachusetts — Colonial Inn

A presence in the room, a grayish figure floating at the end of the bed, a door closing without explanation; these are some of the experiences that guests have had at the historic Colonial Inn, and an experience you may have as well, especially if you stay in room 24.

Detroit, Michigan — The Inn on Ferry Street

Don’t let this charming collection of historic buildings fool you — the Inn on Ferry Street is home to two apparitions. One is a woman in a wedding dress that guests see in the Roehm House, and the other is a man in Owen House room 4102, who has a tendency of grabbing arms.

Sauk Centre, Minnesota — The Palmer House Hotel

This hotel has it all, including an unsettling history of fires and a man hanging himself. Guests and employees report apparitions, noises, hidden bones, and even possessions. The hotel was the subject of an episode of Ghost Adventures.

Natchez, Mississippi — Monmouth Plantation

General John Quitman bought the Monmouth Plantation for his wife in 1826, just eight years after it was built. But he later died a slow, painful death from being poisoned, and now he haunts the halls, watching over everything that people do in his house.

St. Louis, Missouri — The Lemp Mansion

The Lemp family has been the victim of its fair share of tragedies — heart failure, four suicides, cancer, divorce, and even an alleged illegitimate child kept hidden in the attic. It’s no wonder that trouble continues at the Lemp Mansion even decades after the family line ended.

Pray, Montana — Chico Hot Springs Resort & Day Spa

Though this resort is, by all means, a world-class place to relax, its guests aren’t always the living. The Chico Hot Springs Resort & Day Spa is home to the Lady in White, an apparition seen all over the grounds who smells of lilac and jasmine and enjoys rocking in her favorite rocker.
