Princess Diana

Funerals in America cost between $7,000 and $10,000 on average. If that seems steep, consider that Ronald Reagan’s funeral cost taxpayers $400 million. Or what about Michael Jackson’s $25,000 casket?

Celebrities are known to have lavish funerals. It’s one last chance to flaunt their fame and fortune. Check out some of the most notable celebrity funerals below.

Princess Diana

After Princess Diana’s tragic death, people around the world were in mourning. Her funeral was one of the biggest televised events to date with an estimated 2.5 billion people watching.

Some of the most famous guests to attend her funeral were George Michael, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, and Stephen Spielberg. Elton John even did a beautiful rendition of his “Candle In The Wind” to honor his late friend.

Elvis Presley

When the King of Rock and Roll passed, over 30,000 fans attended a public viewing of his casket in Graceland. President Carter sent 300 National Troops to keep things in order at the viewing. The next day, a more intimate funeral was held. Stars such as James Brown, Ann-Margret, and George Hamilton were there.

Michael Jackson

After his unexpected death, a series of services and memorials were held to honor this iconic star’s legacy. On September 4, 2009, Michael Jackson’s funeral was held at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park and was only open to close family and celebrities. Attendees were surprised to see Elizabeth Taylor there since she tends to stay out of the public eye.

His family showed up in five rented Phantom Rolls Royces. MJ’s gold casket was adorned with white and purple flowers. To honor their father, his children placed a bejeweled crown on top of the coffin. $1.4 million was spent on security, and the service cost an estimated $150,000.

Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan’s death was honored by the United States’ official Day of Mourning. On this day, the stock market closed, and federal workers were given the day off, costing taxpayers $400 million. His casket cost about $14,000 alone!

Honoring previous presidents in a grand way has been a part of U.S. history. Around 4,000 people gathered for the funeral service, many of which included important political figures.
