What would you say with your final breath? There have been many famous last words throughout history. Some were funny, some fitting, and others tragic. Here are a few of our favorites:
- “I’m going away tonight.” – James Brown. The godfather of soul uttered the phrase to his manager Charles Bobbit on Christmas morning when he passed away.
- “I found Rome of clay; I leave it to you of marble.” – Augustus Caesar
- “I’ve had 18 straight whiskies… I think that’s the record.” – Dylan Thomas, who met an unfortunate demise at 39 years old.
- “Let me die in this old uniform in which I fought my battles. May God forgive me for ever having put on another.” – Benedict Arnold. Talk about a change of heart. The famous traitor apparently wanted to wear the uniform of the U.S. continental army on his deathbed.
- “Why not? After all, it belongs to him.” – Charlie Chaplin responding to the priest’s last rites, “May the Lord have mercy on your soul.”
- “You got me.” – John Dillinger, whose criminal life finally caught up to him.
- “I’m going to be with Gloria now.” The final words of beloved actor, James Stewart. Stewart was speaking about his wife, who passed a few years earlier.
- “I should have drunk more Champagne.” – John Maynard Keynes, the famous economist.
- “Ok, I won’t.” – Elvis Presley‘s last comment as he went to the bathroom. His fiancée had told him, “don’t fall asleep in there.”
- “I’m so bored with it all.” – Winston Churchhill‘s final words before slipping into a coma.
- “A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP” – The last public words from Leonard Nimoy. LLAP stands for “live long and prosper,” the famous quote from Spock, the character Nimoy played in Star Trek.
- “Why should I talk to you? I’ve just been talking with your boss.” – Wilson Mizner the famous playwright, after speaking to a priest.
- “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.” – Joe DiMaggio’s last words were on the true love of his life, Marilyn Monroe.
- “Tomorrow, at sunrise, I shall no longer be here.” The famous Nostradamus was finally right about one of his predictions.
- “I’ve had a hell of a lot of fun and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” – Errol Flynn, the famous on-screen action hero. He lived a life of adventure, and true to his nature was buried with six bottles of whiskey.
