300 unclaimed remains sit on shelves in Iowa — some are veterans

As more families choose cremation over burial, the number of unclaimed remains is expected to grow. Many Iowa funeral directors’ dedication to finding the families of unclaimed remains shines light onto the growing problem of unclaimed remains throughout the state and the U.S.

According to an unscientific survey by the Iowa Funeral Directors Association, there are around 300 unclaimed remains throughout Iowa.
