Funeral coaches have been around for a long time. From the early horse-drawn carts to the automobiles of today, they have ranged from classic design to the downright bizarre. Let’s take a look at some of the more iconic funeral coaches in history.

1. JFK’s 1964 Cadillac Miller-Meteor

This funeral coach was used to carry John F. Kennedy to his final resting place. The car was sold in 2012 for $160,000. It was bought by a private collector, but there are plans to eventually make it available for public display.

2. Lincoln’s Hearse

Another coach of an assassinated president. There aren’t many photos of the actual funeral coach from 1865 because it was destroyed in a fire in 1887. That didn’t stop a Springfield, Illinois funeral director from painstakingly recreating the funeral coach. The final result was a $150,000 replica that went on display at the 2015 National Funeral Directors Association convention in Indianapolis.

3. Elvis Presley’s 1977 Miller-Meteor Landau

A funeral coach fit for the king. A lot of mystery surrounded the highly sought-after funeral coach from the Memphis ceremony. The hearse apparently met its end in Florida in 1984 when it was loaned to a funeral home in Miami and caught fire on the highway. The flames quickly burned the car and the result was a total loss.

4. Ghostbuster’s Ecto-1

This ’59 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance-turned-ghosthunter is one of the most recognized. The original vehicle used in the 1984 Ghostbusters was rusting away on a film studio lot. It wasn’t until a group of fans petitioned to buy the car that it was restored to an almost perfect condition.
