In an interview with Chuck Standal of West-Kjos Funeral Home, he explains families leave the ashes of loved ones behind for a variety of reasons. It might be that they forgot or find it too difficult to claim the remains.

Many funeral directors hang onto these urns for decades in case a loved one were to ever stop by asking for them. Standal says most funeral homes have 10 to 20 urns they’ve stored for years.
