We’ve all heard the phrase: Every time a person dies, another person is born. It’s a nice sentiment, isn’t it?
Bradford Lyon, who has a doctorate in Mathematics, has a passion for data visualization. Back in 2013, he put together a map that showed simulated real-time births and deaths in the world. His simulation is created using data from several sources including the CIA Factbook of population birth and death rates. You can read more about his work here.
The birth rate is 4.1/second, and the death rate is 1.7/second. After watching for a couple minutes, there had been about 2,100 births compared to 930 deaths. It looks as though every time one person dies, four new people are born.
While it is purely just a simulation using estimated data, it does help paint a beautiful picture. The speed at which the statistics pop on the screen for both categories is a powerful reminder of the circle of life and the scope of our world.
Take a look for yourself at the simulation and let us know your thoughts!
