With Memorial Day approaching, we want to remind everyone of the real reason for the holiday. Although it’s a great time to spend with family, it’s also a time to spend honoring and remembering fallen soldiers.

In the past, we wrote Memorial Day blog posts honoring the most recent military deaths — read the 2018 post here and the 2017 post here. This year for Memorial Day, we want to continue the tradition of honoring fallen soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The following 16 individuals are the most recent military deaths from 2019.

Spc. Miguel L. Holmes

Holmes died May 6, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Spc. Miguel L. Holmes, 22, of Hinesville, Georgia, died May 6 in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan of injuries from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of Savannah, Georgia.

Miguel is survived by his three sisters, two brothers, two grandparents, and many extended family members.

Pfc. Michael A. Thomason

Thomason died April 29, 2019, while serving during Operation Inherent Resolve.

Military Times — Pfc. Michael A. Thomason, 28, of Lincoln Park, Michigan, died April 29 in Kobani, Syria of injuries from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Michael is survived by his parents, two children, brother, two sisters, nine nephews and nieces, and many extended family members.

Spc. Michael T. Osario

Osario died April 23, 2019, while serving during Operation Inherent Resolve.

Military Times — Spc. Michael T. Osario, 20, of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, died April 23 in Taji, Iraq from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade, 4th Infantry Division of Fort Carson as an intelligence analyst.

Michael is survived by his parents, brothers, and many extended family members.

Spc. Ryan Riley

Riley died April 20, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Spc. Ryan Riley, 22, of Richmond, Kentucky, died April 20 in Nineveh province, Iraq from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Ryan is survived by many family members.

Staff Sgt. Albert J. Miller

Miller died April 19, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Staff Sgt. Albert J. Miller, 24, of Richmond, New Hampshire, died April 19 in Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 736th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.

Albert is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and many extended family members.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman

Slutman died April 8, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman, 43, of Newark, Delaware, died April 8 in Parwan province, Afghanistan from a bombing. He was assigned to the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve.

Christopher is survived by his wife and three children.

Cpl. Robert Hendriks

Hendriks died April 8, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Cpl. Robert Hendricks, 25, of Locust Valley, New York, died April 8 in Parwan province, Afghanistan from a bombing. He was assigned to the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve.

Robert is survived by his parents, brother, and many extended family members.

Sgt. Benjamin Hines

Hines died April 8, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Sgt. Benjamin Hines, 31, of York, Pennsylvania, died April 8 in Parwan province, Afghanistan from a bombing. He was assigned to the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve.

Robert is survived by his mother, stepfather, father, fiancée, six siblings, and many extended family members. His family asks for any donations to be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation or the Tragedy Assistance Program For Survivors.

Sgt. 1st Class Will D. Lindsay

Lindsay died March 22, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Sgt. 1st Class Will D. Lindsay, 33, of Cortez, Colorado, died March 22 in Kunduz province, Afghanistan of injuries in combat operations. He was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group.

Will is survived by his wife and four daughters.

Spc. Joseph P. Collette

Collette died March 22, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Spc. Joseph P Collette, 29, of Lancaster, Ohio, died March 22 in Kunduz province, Afghanistan of injuries in combat operations. He was assigned to the 242nd Ordnance Battalion, 71st Explosive Ordnance Group.

Joseph is survived by his wife, children, and many extended family members.

Sgt. Holli Bolinski

Bolinski died March 7, 2019, while serving during Operation Spartan Shield.

Military Times — Sgt. Holli Bolinski, 37, of Pinckneyville, Illinois, died March 7 in Kuwait of injuries from a vehicle collision. She was assigned to the 657th Transportation Detachment in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Holli is survived by her husband, five children, mother, father-in-law, maternal grandparents, siblings, and many extended family members.

Spc. Jackson Johnson

Johnson died March 7, 2019, while serving during Operation Spartan Shield.

Military Times — Spc. Jackson Johnson, 20, of Hillsboro, Missouri, died March 7 in Kuwai from a vehicle collision. He was assigned to the 657th Transportation Detachment in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Jackson is survived by his parents, sister, and many extended family members.

Sgt. 1st Class Joshua “Zach” Beale

Beale died January 22, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Sgt. 1st Class Joshua “Zach” Beale, 32, of Carrollton, Virginia, died January 20 in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan of injuries from small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Joshua is survived by his wife and two children.

Sgt. Cameron Meddock

Meddock died January 17, 2019, while serving during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Military Times — Sgt. Cameron Meddock, 26, of Spearman, Texas, died January 17 in Landstuhl, Germany of injuries from small-arms fire. He was an Army Ranger assigned to the Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Cameron is survived by his wife who is pregnant with their first child, parents, and many extended family members.

Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Shannon Kent

Kent died January 16, 2019, while serving during Operation Inherent Resolve.

Military Times — Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Shannon Kent, 35, of Pine Plains, New York, died January 16 in Manbij, Syria from a suicide bomb attack. She was assigned to Cryptologic Warfare Activity 66 in Fort Meade, Maryland.

Shannon is survived by her husband, two children, and many extended family members.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan Farmer

Farmer died January 16, 2019, while serving during Operation Inherent Resolve.

Military Times — Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan Farmer, 37, of Boynton Beach, Florida, died January 16 in Manbij, Syria from a suicide bomb attack. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Jonathan is survived by his spouse, four children, and his parents.
