Remembering Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds

Pictures of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds

Last week we lost two incredible actresses and human beings.

Carrie Fisher passed away on December 27 from cardiac arrest, and her mother Debbie Reynolds passed away on December 28, just one day after her daughter.

On December 26, Fisher went into cardiac arrest on a plane flight coming back from London and later died on December 27 in the hospital. Reynolds was at home planning her daughter’s funeral when she was taken to the hospital due to a medical emergency, possibly a stroke. Her son Todd Fisher said she had been under a lot of stress after his sister passed away.

Carrie Fisher is best known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. She got her acting start in the 1975 film Shampoo playing the role of Lorna.

Reynolds’ acting career took off when she landed the role of Kathy Selden in the 1952 film Singin’ in the Rain.

Todd Fisher is devastated by the loss of his mother and sister, but shared that Reynolds said she wanted to be with Carrie, so now they can be together.

Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd also is mourning the loss of her mother and grandmother. When her mother was in the hospital, she rushed to be with her and brought Fisher’s French bulldog Gary in to visit her.

Fans and celebrities are coping with the loss of Fisher and Reynolds.

Fisher wrote her own obituary, sharing how she wants to be remembered in her novel “Wishful Drinking,” published in 2008.

The mother and daughter will likely have a joint funeral planned by relatives.

Here is a list of other celebrities we have lost in 2016, including beloved actor Alan Rickman on February 21, musical innovator Prince on April 21, and professional boxer and social activist Muhammad Ali on June 3.

While they may not be family, many of the people we lost this year had an impact on our lives some way and it’s normal to grieve for them. But there are ways to cope with grief and help others dealing with loss as well.
