Father’s Day is a special time when we celebrate the fathers and father figures in our lives. But it can be a hard time for those who have lost their father.

Although one’s father may not be here with us today, we can still celebrate on Father’s Day the impact and memories that they left behind. Below you’ll find some inspiring ways you can celebrate a dad’s memory through activities, songs, and other tributes.

Memorial Ideas

  • Visit your father’s final resting place. Stop by a gravesite or the place his ashes were spread for a quiet moment of reflection. You also can bring fresh flowers or talk with him.
  • Write him a thank-you letter. Writing is a therapeutic way to express yourself and your feelings toward your father. You can take the time to write out what you are thankful for from your father.
  • Plant a memorial tree. Every year, the tree can be a gathering site where you can visit and reflect.
  • Create a scrapbook. It’s a great way to preserve and collect memories with your father.
  • Donate in his name. Help others by donating to a charity that best reflects your father.

Tribute Songs

Eric Clapton — My Father’s Eyes. “Bit by bit, I ‘ve realized, That he was here with me; I looked into my father ‘s eyes.”

Bruce Springsteen — My Father’s House. “My father’s house shines hard and bright. It stands like a beacon calling me in the night.”

Johnny Cash — A Boy Named Sue. “I got all choked up and I threw down my gun, called him my Pa, and he called me his son. And I come away with a different point of view.”

Phil Collins — You’ll Be in My Heart. “From this day on, now and forever more, you’ll be in my heart.”

Holly Dunn — Daddy’s Hands. “I remember daddy’s hands folded silently in prayer, and reachin’ out to hold me, when I had a nightmare.”
