Hong Kong has about 200,000 remains waiting to be buried since private cemeteries and columbariums are expensive, and there’s a four-year waiting period or longer for a public burial plot or niche. It’s estimated that this number of remains could reach 400,000 in 2023. This is why some people choose to have their ashes scattered in an ash scattering garden or in the sea, but many people still want a traditional burial.
