Spring is just around the corner, and along with blooming flowers, it brings inspiration for ways to personalize a funeral service.

From decorations to memorial gifts, there are many spring-themed ideas you can incorporate to create a unique and meaningful funeral service, especially if the deceased enjoyed the springtime. Here are some ideas for planning a spring-themed funeral service.

Spring Colors

First off, keep in mind not to go overboard when incorporating a spring color scheme into your funeral service. When it comes to spring colors, you can’t go wrong with pastels. But if you want to go a different route, HGTV has six spring color suggestions that aren’t pastels:

  • Brown
  • Emerald Green
  • Gray
  • Orange
  • Turquoise
  • Yellow

Green is the perfect color to incorporate into a spring funeral service, as it’s the color of nature. Greenery is Pantone’s 2017 color of the year, and is described as a “fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew.”

Flowers are associated with both springtime and funeral services. You can incorporate funeral flowers into your service and express condolences with personalized floral sprays, photo floral wreaths, and other floral decorations and mementos.

Some typical spring flowers are:

  • Camellia
  • Daffodil
  • Pansy
  • Peony
  • Sweet Pea
  • Tulip

Another easy way to incorporate flowers and springtime into the funeral is by holding the service outdoors. A loved one’s backyard or a local park would make a beautiful funeral service location, just make sure you have permission to use the space. Also, it may be a good idea to have a backup indoor location in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Spring Decorations

Along with flowers, there are several other spring-themed decorations that can be incorporated into a funeral service. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Bird-themed decorations or birdhouses.
  • Butterfly-themed decorations.
  • Decorated memorial pots filled with greenery or memorial gifts.
  • Nests filled with small mementos.
  • Rain boots and umbrellas with flower bouquets inside.
  • Twigs painted in spring colors.

Spring-Themed Mementos

The spring theme can be carried out into cherished memorial gifts and keepsakes as well. A bouquet of flowers or a packet of seeds that families can plant in their loved one’s honor make meaningful memorial gifts.

Memorial flowers also can be repurposed into special mementos for loved ones. Flowers can be preserved by having them pressed, dried, or turned into a memento like memorial jewelry. Here are a few suggestions on how flowers can be turned into unique memorial items:

  • Dried flower shadowbox
  • Fragrant potpourri
  • Flower candles
  • Frame-pressed flowers
  • Ornaments filled with dried flowers
  • Pressed flower bookmarks or coasters

Spring is the season for eating fresh foods from the garden. Platters of fruit and vegetables can be served during the service or at a reception following the service. You can use fruit and vegetables to make healthy and simple springtime appetizers such as mango-strawberry salsa or strawberry goat cheese bruschetta.
