Crowdfunding is a powerful tool for families when faced with an unexpected death. For example, when this 9-year old Montana girl died in a tragic hiking accident, it was used to bring the community together to support the family.

But paying for funeral expenses is not the only way families use Tribute Pay’s crowdfunding feature. In fact, we’ve seen some special ways communities have recently come together to use crowdfunding.

In many cases, raising money is used in lieu of funeral flowers. It’s not a new concept, as many friends and family members have helped make memorial donations before. But by having the crowdfunding feature appear directly on the online obituary, family and friends have an easy way to make their donations. Let’s look at the two common types of donations made.

Raising Money for Charity

Crowdfunding can be used to collect donations to support a charity that honors the memory of the deceased. In some cases, it’s a charity or cause that the deceased championed all their life, such as community homeless shelters, Habitat for Humanity, or the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Below is a list of common charities that families donate to:

  • Save the Children
  • Wounded Warrior Project
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • American Red Cross
  • Jude Children’s Research Hospital
  • World Wild Life Fund

Similarly, families can use crowdfunding to collect money to support research for cancer, Alzheimer’s, or another disease. Below is a list of common medical research organizations:

  • Arthritis Foundation
  • Michael J. Fox Foundation
  • March of Dimes Foundation
  • American Cancer Society
  • American Heart Association

By using the Tribute Pay feature to collect charitable donations, the family can conveniently keep track of who made donations. This makes it easier for them to follow up with thank you letters after the funeral. They also can then donate one large sum to the charity of their choice in honor of their loved one.

Raising Money for Care

In other instances, crowdfunding helps those in need. This is especially true in cases where the deceased was the primary caregiver for the family. In these cases, the Tribute Pay feature can be used as a discrete way for family and friends to make donations to the family.

Even if the funeral expenses are met, crowdfunding is helpful in these types of scenarios:

  • Help supplement monthly income for the family while the family adjusts to the loss of primary income.
  • Assist with transportation or living expenses for a short period of time.
  • Create a small scholarship to help with education expenses for children of the deceased.
  • To help assist with other childcare expenses.
  • Start a memorial fund to honor the deceased in other specific ways.
  • To assist with travel expenses to help spread ashes in a specific location.
  • Help families with medical expenses.
