As communities come together to celebrate Independence Day, here are ways your funeral home can get involved, engage families, and build meaningful relationships within the community.

Community BBQ

A classic Fourth of July barbecue is a great way to bring people together. Get creative with patriotic dishes and red, white, and blue-themed desserts.

Consider partnering with restaurants, venues, and local entertainment to really get the party going. For example, reach out to your local butcher for deals on meats to grill, or partner with a hardware store to provide decorations and patio chairs. Don’t forget to reach out to a local ice cream shop to treat guests to cold desserts on a hot summer day!

You also can use the BBQ as a way to honor and thank certain people in your community. For example, it could be a way to thank veterans or public servants for their service to your community.

Hold a Memorial Picnic in the Park

July is also National Picnic Month. Which makes it a perfect time for your funeral home to host a memorial picnic in the park or cemetery. Invite families who have lost someone in the past year — or anyone else who is missing a loved one. Check out these 10 special summer remembrance ideas for ways to make the picnic even more special!

Host an Eating Contest

The Fourth of July isn’t just about fireworks. There’s also good food. What better way to celebrate than hosting an eating contest? Borrow some inspiration from Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, which hosts the infamous annual hot dog eating contest every Independence Day.

Your funeral home could sell tickets to enter the contest and use the money to support a local charity or memorial fund.

Sponsor Float

Another easy way to get your funeral home’s name out there is to sponsor a float in the local parade. The Fourth of July parade — besides fireworks — is one of the main highlights of the holiday. And for a low fee, your funeral home can boost brand awareness and show your community support.

Hand out Branded Items

If sponsoring a float isn’t your thing, you also can hand out festive gifts branded with your funeral home’s name. For example, branded bottles of water or small paper fans will be appreciated during a hot July day watching the parade.

VIP Firework Party

Does your funeral home have a great view of the firework show? Or do you know someone who does? Then host a special VIP firework viewing event. Partner with local restaurants to cater some drinks and snacks, hook up a nice sound system to play patriotic tunes, and use the money raised from the VIP tickets for a local charity.

Another great way to get involved is staying active on social media. Here are a few ideas to get inspired:

  • Share your favorite Fourth of July soundtrack with your followers.
  • Post your favorite grilling recipes and summer desserts.
  • Write a blog or share some articles about Fourth of July fireworks safety to keep families safe this year.
